Volunteers worked “enthusiastically” through the rain to collect around 85kg of litter during the last Rhu beach clean of 2023.
Organised by the Rhu and Shandon Community Council, a group of seven locals donated their time to the effort on the beach area adjacent to Ferry Lane during Saturday, November 18.
The litter collected includes glass and plastic bottles, general waste plastic wrapping, sweet wrappers, planks of wood, old shoes, a broken plastic storage container, two metre long steel piping, and plastic food containers.
Organiser Lynda Baylem said: “All worked enthusiastically in the cold and rainy conditions, and it was great to see the family of a dad and his three children for the first time.
“[The] rubbish doesn’t look like a lot, but it was pretty weighty and better off collected and not being on our beach.
“It’s good to collect as much litter as possible to give the wildlife a chance and to help the environment.”
The Rhu and Shandon Community Council beach cleans began in July 2023 and the council is encouraging more volunteers to join their efforts next year - warmly welcoming anyone who wants to help.
The next Rhu Beach Clean will be on Saturday, January 13, 2024, and volunteers are asked to meet in Ferry Lane Rhu at 10am.
