Pupils at Helensburgh primary school had a “fun and exciting” time showing off their skills at a Robert Burns themed talent show.

John Logie Baird Primary school pupils performed songs and poetry on Friday, January 26 for their annual ‘Scottish X-Factor’ show.

Children from P1 to P7 learned to recite a variety of Scots and Burn’s poems which they performed on stage for the school community.

One of the pupils said: “It was fun and exciting and the best part was reciting my poem.

“It was really fun being on the stage but I was a little bit nervous.”

Parents were impressed by the talent on display and had an excellent time watching the show.

Kaileigh Smart said: “It was really fun for parents to watch but also for the children taking part. You could see they had worked really hard.

“I thought the whole school might have taken the roof off though when the children decided to bang their feet singing Mhairi's Wedding at the end - it really made me smile to hear them all so happy and enjoying themselves.”

The school staff were also blown away by the children and their excellent efforts.

Headteacher Carolyn Randall said: “I was bowled over with the enthusiasm of our children, how they embraced the Scottish culture and relished singing songs with gusto! I'm so proud.”

Staff member Yvonne Stanley added: “I thought it was very engaging, it was very fun and it made me laugh as the accents were hilarious.”

The panel of judges - including local councillor Fiona Howard, PC Omand and PC Gallagher, Tammy Heenan from the parent council and Jen Allison from the staff team - had the difficult job of choosing the winners from each class.

Councillor Fiona Howard said: “I just wanted to thank the school for inviting me to join the panel at Friday's event.

“The kids were amazing and I really enjoyed it. What a great way to start the weekend!”

In March the school will celebrate other cultures through their One World event.

Additionally, P4 to P7 children are learning Arabic this term.

John Logie Baird aims to celebrate Scottish and world cultures to provide an inclusive environment for pupils some of whom come from countries including Ukraine, Afghanistan, Poland, and Pakistan.
