VITAL funds to help a Helensburgh support group have been presented thanks to the efforts of a sewing club.

Helensburgh’s Sew Easy Quilting Group raised £900 for the Helensburgh and Dumbarton branch of Parkinson’s UK during their show at Helensburgh Parish Church last year.

The money was presented recently at the church during the Parkinson's group's regular gathering.

An exhibition of hand-made items, along with traybakes, tea and coffee, helped raise the significant funds.

Alice Hall, volunteer co-ordinator for Scotland at Parkinson UK, said: "An enormous thanks to people who donated so generously because this amount makes such a different to a local group like Parkinson's UK Scotland Helensburgh Support Group.

"Helping to improve the lives of people with Parkinson's is one of the vital things we do."

And Brian Donald, whose wife Fiona runs the group but wasn't available for the presentation, added: "The money will be used to support people living with Parkinson's in Helensburgh and surrounding area. Our thanks to the quilting group for this money."

Speaking after the exhibition last year, quilting group member Mick Stead said: “We don’t do the quilt show very often – it’s a lot of work and I think it must have been four or five years ago that we did it.

“It poured down all day and we were so surprised at the amount of money we made. We didn’t realise we were going to raise that much.”

Helensburgh’s Sew Easy Quilting Group meets every Monday at the Helensburgh Community Hub, with members paying £3 per session to cover hall costs.

And Helensburgh and Dumbarton branch of Parkinson’s UK meet at Helensburgh Parish Church Hall on the last Monday of every month from 1.30pm to 3pm.
