Creative and forward-thinking pupils at Kilcreggan Primary School imagined “a brighter future” for the village during a unique project.

Pupils formed their vision for Kilcreggan over the next nine years and displayed their work to parents, community members, local stakeholders, and councillors during their ‘Creativity Inspiring Learning Showcase’ last December.

Collaborating with Claire Whyte and Nicky Hesketh from SKS Scotland, the event aimed to emphasise the role of young minds in shaping Kilcreggan.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Under the overarching theme of ‘Shaping Cove and Kilcreggan's Future’, pupils meticulously crafted models aimed at fostering sustainability, promoting recreation, generating employment, and embracing modern energy solutions.

“The showcase not only demonstrated the students' creativity but also their commitment to crafting a community that is not only liveable but also adaptable to the demands of the 21st century.

“The pupils of Kilcreggan Primary poured their imaginations and hearts into envisioning a brighter future for their hometown.”

The youngest pupils, in P1/2, focused on enhancing Craigrownie Park, making a model and proposing enhancements such as additional play equipment, a Sealife Centre powered by solar panels, and more bins.

P3/4 pupils delved into making a model of the heart of Kilcreggan, and wrote a letter to ‘Our Community, Cove and Kilcreggan’, outlining all the changes they feel would make a difference to their community, including improving the access to the beach and a cycle path.

Older students in P4/5 and P6/7 presented detailed models and presentations of various community areas, thanks to a workshop led by local artist Ali Mills where pupils got to sharpen their creative skills and learn about community planning.

Ali showed them how to play with colours and perspective, and then they used those skills to paint their own pictures of the community.

The spokesperson continued: “The success of Kilcreggan Primary's Creativity Inspiring Learning Showcase underscores the importance of nurturing young voices in community development.

“By providing a platform for students to express their ideas and engage with local stakeholders, the showcase not only amplifies youth perspectives but also lays the groundwork for collaborative action towards a sustainable and vibrant future.”
