Pupils at a Helensburgh primary school enjoyed a “fun filled” time celebrating World Book Day last week.
Children with a passion for reading at St Joseph's Primary School, alongside their teacher, Jenni Hamill, planned a day of activities to mark the occasion on Thursday, March 7.
Pupils chose the theme of ‘get cosy and read’ which encouraged children to come to school in comfy clothes where they took part in a book swap shop, creating and designing book characters using potatoes, a treasure hunt, and a potato parade.
Principal teacher Claire Thomson said: “Miss Hamill and the reading leaders put a great deal of time and effort into organising a fun filled day while considering the impact on the environment and parent’s purses.
“I had seen the potato designing done by other schools and suggested it to the group.
“I was especially keen as I lead the eco group and the potatoes could be peeled and eaten with little waste…if pupils could bring themselves to eat their creation!”
Pupils aimed for the event to be low-cost and environmentally friendly whilst still being fun.
Jenni Hamill said: “The children were very aware of the strain on families financially when costumes had to be bought or made for World Book Day.
“They also wanted a sustainable alternative as we are conscious of our environmental impact.”
World Book Day aims to promote reading for pleasure and was created by UNESCO in 1995.
