A lifeline post office has been saved just weeks before it was set to close for good.

Garelochhead Post Office was to close on March 28 as the sub-postmaster and owner both planned to retire.

Evanda Street has been the "temporary" postmaster for the past 10 years.

The name of the new sub-postmaster has not been immediately released.

The Post Office wanted to cut the sub-postmaster's salary by thousands of pounds.

Closure would have forced residents to travel to Rosneath or Helensburgh for the nearest Post Office services.

But Jackie Baillie MSP said talks between all sides have found a new operator to take over the current facility from March 28.

Talks were held in the village two weeks ago to try to resolve the dispute and at that point, owner Anne McQueen agreed to another three months while attempts were made to find a solution.

Anne said: "I am pleased for the village. It’s really good news that this has been retained.

“So many people use the branch, particularly for banking and I am thrilled that it will be able to continue.”

Ms Baillie said: “I was delighted to be able to facilitate talks aimed at retaining this absolutely vital service for the community of Garelochhead and all the residents who use it.

“I would also like to thank Anne and Stuart McQueen for working with us and Mark Gibson, from the Post Office, for his willingness to assist.”
