The volunteer crew on the Helensburgh lifeboat were called to rescue two people on a stricken yacht.

The 'mayday' callout by HM Coastguard happened at around 2.20pm on Tuesday, April 9 where crews were asked to assist a 36ft yacht with two people on board which had been dismasted off Kilcreggan.

Within minutes, the lifeboat was scene along with a ferry named Aly Cat, that placed a line on board to hold the vessel steady and prevent it from drifting further ashore.

The lifeboat crew secured the yacht and towed it to Rhu Marina, with the mast still over the side and the headsail still rigged and immersed in the water.

However, the weather conditions prevented the mast being recovered so crews decided to secure the yacht on one of Rhu Marina's moorings.

The two shocked people on board were unhurt and were transferred to the marina.

Howard Morrison, lifeboat operations manager, said: “The yacht was in a precarious position having lost its’ mast and the rigged head sail was dragging dangerously under the water. Fortunately, no one was injured.

"This is the 13th ‘shout’ so far this year. As the weather gets warmer and people return to the water, we urge everyone to check their safety equipment and ensure they have completed the maintenance checks before taking to the water."
