PUPILS got a visit from a submariner in their final days of the school term before summer break.
John Logie Baird Primary welcomed W02 Allan McLean, a Royal Navy submariner for 40 years, for Armed Forces Day.
He spoke to pupils about his work and answered questions, as well as listening to stories of their own families serving in the Navy.
The school is preparing to return to the original building after extensive refurbishment and staff have been packing up their Portakabin ahead of August.
Allan happens to be the dad of teacher Natasha McClelland. She told us: "The picture was part of his talk and showed the pupils what a submarine looked like.
"He also showed the pupils his medals and pin badges. Including his gold pin which he was awarded for serving over 20 patrols.
"The pupils were amazed to hear that Allan had been underwater for a total of nine years, if you were to add up all his sea time.
"The pupils also got to try on his caps.
"The pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences. We have many pupils who have parents that serve in the Royal Navy and who are also submariners.
"In the two older classes, P5/4 and P6/5, Allan used a plastic bottle, straw and water to demonstrate how a submarine sinks and more importantly how it surfaces. It was very hands-on and the pupils enjoyed blowing air into the homemade submarine.
"I can really relate to what our pupils go through when their loved ones are away and hope with visits like this that they know they are not alone.
"We all support each other and are very proud of our loved ones. Their sacrifice, dedication and hard work is truly inspiring."
