PEOPLE in Argyll and Bute will soon have 24/7 access to physiotherapy support through a digital health app.
The expanded Phio app, developed by healthtech company EQL, will allow users to self-refer for physiotherapy without needing a GP appointment.
Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) will be the first in the UK to offer this direct referral model.
The app is designed to support people with muscle or joint issues, many of whom can recover at home with the right guidance.
This approach helps prioritise face-to-face appointments for those who need clinical assessment or may require surgery.
Between 20 and 30 per cent of all GP appointments are related to muscle or joint problems.
The Phio app will allow patients immediate access to assessment, supported self-management programmes or direct referral to local NHS physiotherapy services without the need for an appointment at a GP practice.
Derek Laidler, lead physiotherapist for Argyll and Bute, said: "We are really excited about this latest collaboration with EQL using the Phio platform.
"This new process, which will be the first of its kind in the UK, not only aims to offer rapid access to expert support for people with muscle or joint problems but will also free up capacity within our busy GP practices as most people will no longer need to contact the Practice for an appointment."
