TRIBUTES have been paid to a long-serving councillor and community champion who has passed away after a prolonged illness.
Councillor Dougie Philand, who represented Mid Argyll for 19 years and became provost of Argyll and Bute in 2024, was described as a dedicated public servant.
He spent nearly 40 years working in mental health services, most recently as service manager for children’s and adolescent mental health services in Argyll and Bute before retiring.
Dougie remained a strong advocate for mental health support throughout his life.
Deeply involved in the community, Dougie supported many organisations as a trustee or board member, including Auchindrain Township, the Multiple Sclerosis Centre, and Argyll and Bute Children’s Befrienders.
He also served on several council committees, including Community Services and the Planning, Protective Services and Licensing Committee.
A familiar figure in Lochgilphead, Ardrishaig, and across Mid Argyll, Dougie was known for his positivity and unwavering dedication to others.
Jan Brown, depute provost and councillor, said: "It is with such huge sadness that we learned of the passing of Councillor Dougie Philand.
"He has been part of the council for such a long time that it is very difficult to imagine it without him.
"Dougie served Argyll and Bute through varied roles as a councillor and did so with dedication and determination to deliver the best for his area.
"More than that, he did everything with a smile, warmth and kindness which were welcome in all circumstances."
