THE grandmother of a schoolgirl who died after being hit by a car has paid a heartbreaking tribute to her granddaughter.

It comes after the Evening Times reported how a 12-year-old girl died in a Glasgow hospital after the incident in Motherwell late on Tuesday afternoon.

The young girl has been named locally as Dalziel High School pupil Abbie Mclaren.

Writing on social media, Abbie’s gran said “she will sadly be missed and a part of my heart has died with her too.”

She added: “Well, tonight my heart has been ripped out. I can’t express how I feel. My precious granddaughter Abbie has been taken away from us. So young and so beautiful. Let the angels look after her now. She will sadly be missed and a part of my heart has died with her too. I love you so much, Abbie. Words can't explain how I will not cope without you now. You always lit up the room everytime you came in, always giving us kisses and cuddles.”

Dozens of people inundated the bereaved gran with touching messages of support.

Abbie’s cousin has since set up a fundraising page with the aim of raising £1,000. So far, just over £500 has been collected.

Her cousin said in a short message of the GoFundMe page: “My family and I would like to raise money for my beautiful younger cousin Abbie who tragically passed due to a car accident on 12/02/19.”

The collision occurred on The Loaning in Motherwell at around 4.15pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services including an air ambulance were called to the scene and she was taken to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children, but she later died from her injuries.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "At around 4.15pm on Tuesday, police were called to reports of a 12-year-old girl having been struck by a car at The Loaning in Motherwell.

"Emergency services attended and the girl was taken to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow where she later died.

"A 38-year-old man has been arrested and charged over alleged road traffic offences."

Marion Fellows, MP for Motherwell and Wishaw said: “My deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Abbie who has sadly lost her life. My thanks go to the emergency services who attended and did their utmost to treat her.

“The community is rightly heartbroken over what has happened. The response regarding the safety of the road has been overwhelming.

“I have since written to North Lanarkshire Council to raise the community’s petition with them and to join their calls in demanding action to improve safety on The Loaning and surrounding streets. I have particular concerns over speeding cars and there being no safe place for pedestrians to cross.

“I have previously written to North Lanarkshire Council to raise the community’s fears over speeding and traffic on The Loaning. Signs had previously been added to the road, however it is clear that much more is required.

“There is a wider issue regarding the deeply flawed way in which North Lanarkshire Council determines if an area is high risk. They use the Police Scotland accident database. However only incidents that are logged with the Police are included. North Lanarkshire Council must review how it determines an area as high risk and be prepared to listen to the people who use and live on these roads. Communities know best what they need.”
