World number three Reid followed up his victory at the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge by justifying top seeding once again in Pensacola and securing a second straight victory in a final against Argentina’s world number five Gustavo Fernandez.

Reid now tops 4000 points on the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour Rankings for the first time and has closed on the world’s top two ranked players, Shingo Kunieda of Japan and Stephane Houdet of France, by more than 200 points in the last two weeks.

After a first round bye in Pensacola, Reid beat Brazil’s Mauricio Pomme 6-0, 6-0 to reach the quarter-finals.

But, with Friday’s scheduled third day of action completely lost to rain Reid had to play a total of six matches during the last two days, beating French seventh seed Frederic Cattaneo 6-3, 6-2 and Dutch fourth seed Maikel Scheffers 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday to earn his place in Sunday’s final.

After beating Fernandez 6-2, 6-2 to win the Cajun Classic final, Reid prevailed 6-4, 6-3 against his doubles partner in Pensacola to complete back-to-back victories and add to his first two ITF 1 Series title in October and November 2013. Second seeds Fernandez and Reid beat Australians Adam Kellerman and Ben Weekes 6-3, 6-3 in their opening doubles match before sweeping past fourth seeds Cattaneo and Martin Legner of Austria 6-0, 6-3 in the semi-finals, which came after their singles final on Sunday.

As the only two players with three matches on the last day of competition, Fernandez and Reid were narrowly edged out by the third seeds, Belgium’s Joachim Gerard and Nicolas Pefer of France, after a deciding championship tie-break. After his hectic schedule Reid said: “I’ve got to be pleased to come home with two singles titles and a final placing in the doubles in Pensacola after winning five out of six matches in two days.

“Unfortunately the doubles final proved just beyond us, but it was a tough semi-final against Maikel and I’m just pleased to get through in what were not ideal circumstances after Friday’s rain.

“It’s good preparation for the upcoming tournaments at the end of April in South Africa, where I will be defending points after reaching the final of the Super Series in Johannesburg last year.”
