Helensburgh Rugby Club were dealt a double blow this week after Kane Greggain left the club.

The backrow forward, who won the player of the year award last year, was asked by the Burgh management if he would like to captain the Grizzlies this year as they look to establish themselves in a new look BT West Division One.

But Greggain informed head coach David Calderwood on Monday night he had turned down the opportunity to captain Helensburgh and he would be leaving the Ardencaple club to move to National Division 3 side Glasgow Accies.

Calderwood was not happy to lose such an important player halfway through pre-season, as he continues his rebuild of the Grizzlies’ squad in time for the league campaign getting under way in September.

He said: “We had ask Kane Greggain to be captain and he informed me on Monday night that he’s decided that he’s going to leave Helensburgh and play for a club in Glasgow.

“That’s scuppered that, obviously I’m not too happy about it and it’s going to delay the decision a bit.”

Scrum-half Johnny Drake was captain last year for Helensburgh, with Ally Rodgers as vice captain.

Burgh’s first competitive game of the year will be away to Cumbernauld in the BT West Shield on August 19.
