Pre-season is well under way for Helensburgh Rugby Club as they gear up for the new campaign.

With a much longer summer break this year, the Grizzlies have been back at training for over a month, with the competitive season starting in August.

And head coach David Calderwood is pleased with the progress his side have made so far.

He said: “The guys seem to be enjoying it, the fitness stuff we’ve been doing short, sharp bits of fitness so we’re not doing it over the whole session.

“We did a lot more technical rucking skills using bungee cords and that, stealing the ball.

“Stuff you see the professional players doing and you think I’d like to give that a shot, so the guys that did thoroughly enjoyed it and all thought it was really good.

“It’s just something completely different, and that allowed me to see how it worked and how I can put that into a training session with more people there.”

The under-18s have joined up again this season with the first team squad during training, and one young Grizzlie has benefited in particular.

Calderwood added: “It’s been really good for them, the guys are working at their own pace and it’s been quite good. One of the under-18s who came up last season, Luke, who was quite a heavy boy.

“But since he’s started training in the last three months he’s lost four stone, and his fitness has improved no end.

“I’m not taking all the credit for it as he’s been eating a lot better at home as well, but he’s putting in a big effort and he’s coming up and really enjoying the training, we’re encouraging him and his fitness has improved no end.”
