CARDROSS Tennis Club last week hailed its top performers of 2017 at the club’s finals day.

First up was the ladies singles final. In a rerun of last year’s final, defending champion Katie Mitchell faced Caroline McDaid. The tense finale of last year was repeated as the ladies treated the crowd to a three-set epic.

Caroline ran away with the first set and handed her pal Katie a bagel.

The first game of set two was going to be critical and Katie managed to hold her serve to get on the board and from then on dug deep. Katie then ran away with the second set 6-1 to bring us into a decider.

Caroline came out hitting the lines with force to win herself an early break and never looked back to secure a 6-0, 1-6, 6-1 victory.

Next up Raymond Watt faced Ross Kennedy in the gents final. Ross is a previous champion and it was Raymond’s second year in a row making the final.

And Raymond delivered of of his his best performance’s of the season, but it wasn’t enough as Ross secured a comfortable win by two sets to love.

Caroline and Katie were back on court for the ladies' doubles final. Caroline was paired with Mia Rooney to take on Katie and Catherine Court.

Mia and Caroline came out firing but Katie and Cath stood up to the bombardment. Caroline and Mia managed to break serve at crucial moments to clinch a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Harry Gould and Gary Glen faced Felix Carpenter and John Johnston in the men’s doubles.

In the blink of an eye Felix and John had secured the first set with a 6-1 win. It was going to take something special from Gould and Glen to recover but they did just that and levelled the tie with a 6-2 win in the second set.

Gary and Harry had found the secret and were now playing some spectacular stuff. They raced into a 5-2 lead and surely now would get over the line.

At 0-40 on Felix’s serve it was looking like a certainty - but not so as young Felix found some big serves, five-in-a-row in fact, and suddenly it was game on again.

The John and Felix combo clawed their way back into a tie break. The tie break would come down to one errant shot and John and Felix were crowned champions after an epic encounter.

The final match of the day was the mixed doubles which saw a third final for Caroline McDaid as she teamed up Euan McLatchie to take on Keith Wilson and Carolyn Turk.

It was Wilson and Turk who took the crown with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
