Helensburgh cruised to a 5-0 win over Westcliff at Hermitage Academy on Saturday as they closed into within one point of second-top Belleaire.

On a day when many Scottish amateur fixtures fell victim to the cold snap, the home team started strongly, knowing they had to get back to winning ways after last week’s loss to leaders Newshot, and it didn’t take long for them to show the visitors they were up for it.

A delightful through pass from Black found young Caleb Phipps free, and his driving run ended with a fierce shot that found the net.

The hosts were dominant in the opening stages, and a few more clear chances came Burgh’s way but weren’t taken; however the pressure on the visitors’ defence was relentless and midway through the half they doubled their lead, Dougie Black scoring a rare goal for the club when his drive took a deflection off a defender and found itself in the net.

If things were tough for the visitors it certainly didn’t help when just before the break they were reduced to ten men, one of Westcliff’s players going into the ref’s book twice in quick succession.

And it was more of the same for Helensburgh in the second half as Sinclair, back in the side after a spell out, made it three with a fine finish and then shortly after picked up his second with another cool finish past the keeper.

With some new additions on the bench, changes were made to see how these lads would settle in, but it was Scott Petro, no stranger to the side, who made a scoring return by notching number five.

And the same player almost added a sixth when his curling shot from twenty five yards went narrowly past.

Assistant Manager Dav Boxall was delighted with the performance and said: "After last week's disappointment It was good to get it out of our system and produce a decent performance.

"It was also good to get some of the new lads a run and their performance gives extra food for thought for the upcoming games."
