FOUR players from four different clubs teamed up to secure victory in Helensburgh Golf Club’s annual invitational scramble in searing heat on Sunday.

Twenty-one teams of four took part in the competition, and a net score of 53.1 gave victory to the team of Craig Stirling (Helensburgh), Ken Cowan (Glasgow), Colin Baird (Troon St Meddan’s) and Kieron McRedmund (Moor Park).

Following behind in a close second place were Helensburgh’s Alec Dunlop, Glen Brown of the Carrick and the Cardross Golf Club pair of Kath and Alex Brown with a combined net score of 54.2.

The all-Helensburgh quartet of Peter and June Haggarty, Terry Smith and Jim McKenzie returned a net score of 54.7 to take third place.

Prizes were also awarded as follows.

Nearest the pin at the par-3 11th: Craig McPhee (Helensburgh).

Longest drive at the first (ladies): Jackie Lightfoot (Helensburgh).

Longest drive at the 18th (gents): Graeme Main (Dumbarton).

Meanwhile, Jon Simmons and Calum Kennedy were the winning pair last week in the eighth round of the Tuesday evening Eclectic, scoring 23 points, one ahead of runners-up Stuart Buchanan and Douglas Willoughby.

Nobody won the ‘twos’ pot last Tuesday; the prize will roll over to the next round.

Scott Kennedy and Stuart Buchanan are joint overall leaders on 33 points apiece.

Helensburgh’s McIntyre Seniors shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw against Dougalston last Thursday, while in the ladies’ section, the Allender team bravely won 3-2 in extreme heat against Milngavie.
