Ardencaple Amateurs continued their fine start to their first season when they saw off FC Clydebank’s amateurs 6-1 in their opening home friendly fixture.

A stern test was expected from the visitors, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the Central Scottish AFL’s Premier Division at the end of last season after finishing just two points short of a play-off place.

But Caple played a high-tempo pressing game from the off and played a high-tempo, high-pressing game, putting the opposition under pressure at every opportunity and dominating the early exchanges.

Their efforts were rewarded with the opening goal following a corner-kick and a well-struck shot from the edge of the box by Paul Cavana which found the net via the underside of the crossbar.

Caple soon added to their tally courtesy of a powerful Shaun Wallace drive after a penetrating run and perfect lay-off by Gary McKell.

And the third, just before half time, was the goal of the match, a combination of simple but slick passing after a throw-out from keeper Lubo Russell leading to a neat interchange between Ross Willis and Wallace and a composed finish by McKell.

Both sides made changes at half-time and the visitors took to the field with renewed energy and commitment, but couldn’t make any serious impact against a strong Caple defence.

The hosts took to the pitch with an increased level of energy and commitment but still failed to make any serious impact against a strong home defence.

Caple continued to press and added to their lead when Gary McKell scored his second of the day, nipping in to intercept a back-pass before rounding the keeper and calmly slotting home.

FC Clydebank responded quickly and managed to pull a goal back via a well-taken penalty after their forward had been pulled down in the box by the home keeper, but Caple kept pushing on and added a fifth when Davie Holborn lashed home the rebound after Wallace’s shot was parried.

Minutes later Caple notched their sixth with the midfielder returning the favour to his striker as Holborn showed quick feet to beat two opponents before laying the ball off for Wallace to fire home.

Manager Craig Holborn said: “A really impressive display today, especially so since it was against such strong opposition.

"We played with a combination of skill, pace and power and our finishing was absolutely clinical.

“We are really pleased with the way things are shaping up for the season ahead although there is always scope for improvement.”
