HELENSBURGH’S Gordon Reid is gearing up for the final Grand Slam of the wheelchair tennis season – the US Open in New York.

Reid and his doubles partner Alfie Hewett are aiming to retain the doubles title they won at Flushing Meadow in 2017 and to follow up on their Wimbledon doubles triumph last month – though Reid hasn’t given up hope of capturing his first Grand Slam singles title of the year.

The Helensburgh star and his competitors on the ITF Super Series circuit are in St Louis, Missouri this week as they make final preparations for the US Open.

Reid, currently ranked number five in the world, lost out to fourth seed Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina 7-5, 6-4 in the men's singles, but teamed up with Hewett to secure a semi-final spot in the doubles thanks to a 7-5, 6-2 win over Takashi Sanada of Japan and Australia's Ben Weekes.

Looking beyond his Missouri mission, Reid will be contesting his fifth US Open next week, having reached two singles semi-finals and winning two doubles titles at the hard-court slam.

Commenting ahead of the tournament, Rio Paralympic doubles gold medallist Reid said: “I have had an extensive and successful training block since Wimbledon and am in good shape and feeling ready to compete in the last grand slam of 2018.”

Reid and Hewett secured the 2017 US Open title with a 7-5, 6-4 win over the French pair of Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer, and are in fine form after securing the Wimbledon doubles crown last month courtesy of victory over Gerard and Olsson in a dramatic three-set final.
