Helensburgh Amateur Athletics Club had a very successful day at the recent Dunbartonshire AAA cross country relays.

Running on home turf around a tough Duchess Woods course, the 27-strong team of young athletes – many undertaking their first cross country race – bounded over burns and bogs to record some excellent results.

The club fielded two girls’ teams and three boys’ teams, along with one mixed team.

The mixed age relay race saw the girls’ A team of Maddie Rooney, Jenny Scott and Iona Wilson taking first place, with Jenny, Iona and also Bryn Davis winning medals for the fastest laps of the day in their age groups.

Coaches Bev Murphy, Daz Murphy, Matt Scott and Gareth Wilson also entered as a team, finishing 12th overall.

A special mention should also go to the nine under-11 runners in the Helensburgh AAC team, most of whom were tackling their first cross country: Amy Crombie, Emily Ferguson, Holly Kenhard, Harris MacLean, Lewis Cameron, Peter Mitchell, Ruairidh Mair, Rupert Keating and Tom McClearn.

The cross country races now come thick and fast over the next few months, and the club is looking forward to seeing more excellent results for its young ‘bog trotters’.
