ARDENCAPLE’S 2006 team suffered the agony of losing on penalties after a 3-3 draw with Broomhill in the Scottish Cup third round on Saturday, November 3.

Underdogs Caple fell behind from a free-kick after 18 minutes, and lost a second to a superb 15-yard volley.

But Caple worked their way back into the tie and felt themselves hard done by as a result of two decisions before the break – one when Shields’ shot was half stopped by the Broomhill keeper and scooped away from the line, with Caple convinced the ball had crossed the line, and then a minute later when the referee awarded a free kick for a foul which looked well inside the Broomhill box.

Caple were clearly spurred on by those decisions early in the second half, and it was no surprise when Poirier latched onto a through ball and slotted the ball home from 10 yards.

Broomhill, however, looked to have finished the tie when they added a third 10 minutes from time – only for a superb Lewis Sharp free kick to pull it back to 3-2, before clever play by Wilson saw him set up the unmarked Poirier for the equaliser.

Caple might have stolen the game late on, and looked the stronger team in extra time, but they were unable to snatch a winner – and heartache was to follow when Broomhill won the shoot-out 4-3.

Ardencaple returned to league duty with a home game against Mearns on Saturday at Hermitage with a 10.15am kick-off.
