FIVE young members of Helensburgh Amateur Swimming Club competed in the Ren 96 Annual Open in Linwood – and all five returned home having set at least one new ‘personal best’ time.

The youngest, 10-year-old Alice Cumming, secured notable PBs in two events in the 10-11 years age group, cutting a very respectable 2.42 seconds off her 200m individual medley time and a whopping 5.74 seconds in the 100m butterfly, securing seventh overall in the latter.

Roisin Kavanagh, 12, also secured PBs in two events and reached the final of the 100m backstroke: she knocked a respectable 0.3secs off her PB in her heat, and a further 2.27secs in the final, in which she won the silver medal.

Roisin put in a fine performance against competitors up to 12 months older than her, and posted a time in the final which was just over a second quicker than a club record in the event previously set by Kate Storey all the way back in 2013.

Roisin also improved on her PB in the 100m butterfly by 1.54 seconds.

Louisa Brown, 13, improved on her PB in the 12-13 age group’s 100m freestyle by 0.49 seconds, and returning strong performances in three other races.

The two boys in the team recorded PBs in all their races, with 13-year-old Finlay Martin chopping a massive 8.60secs off his best time in the 12-13 years 200m freestyle, and William Peace, also 13, improving his 50m freestyle PB by 3.98 seconds and his 100m freestyle PB by a respectable 0.68 seconds.
