LOCH Lomond’s first team staged a superb second-half fightback to defeat Glasgow Accies' second XI 3-2 at Hermitage Academy.

Goals from Rebecca Holland, Kim McCallion and Eliza Ritchie gave the home team a richly-deserved win from a match they dominated – even though they trailed 2-0 at half time.

Loch Lomond got off to a great start, dominating play early on and creating several chances – only to be denied by strong defending and good saves from the Accies keeper.

But against the run of play the visitors struck not once but twice in the opening stages, catching out the Loch Lomond defence with two quickly-taken free hits, played straight in to their striker who slotted home from close range.

But the home defence settled down after those early setbacks and played with great determination to ensure the Accies forwards wouldn’t get through for a third time.

Loch Lomond pressed forward and had some great passing moves, cutting through the Accies defence, winning a number of penalty corners, but the home side were unable to convert any in the first half leaving them 2-0 down at half time.

However, the hosts kept up the pressure in the second half, working relentlessly and getting the ball from defence through midfield and up to the strikers with some great linking play.

Rebecca Lightfoot made some stunning runs up the right wing, and was able to find team-mates within the D to set up several attempts from penalty corners.

And within 15 minutes of the restart the hosts’ patient build-up play paid off when they worked the ball around the Accies defence and set up Holland to score.

That proved to be the boost the home team needed to press on, and Loch Lomond continued to push high, showing a combination of determination, skill and composure and equalising through McCallion before Ritchie netted what would turn out to be the winner.

The hosts held on well in the closing stages and were understandably thrilled to get a great win under their belts.

Player of the match was awarded to Rebecca Holland, with Rebecca Lightfoot and Vanessa Sabala runners up, while Vanessa was chosen as Loch Lomond’s player of the match by the visitors.

Many thanks to Andy Richardson for taking time to umpire the game.
