Ardencaple FC's 2006 team progressed to the last eight of the Norman Winton Cup with a hard fought 4-2 victory against Glenvale.

Poirier got Ardencaple off to a flying start latching onto a through ball from Livingston and slotting home from eight yards.

Both teams were cancelling each out in the midfield with no threats on goal but that changed on 12 minutes when Dorizon found Sharp inside the box, whose angled drive beat the visiting goalkeeper at the foot of his right hand post.

Boosted by the second goal, Ardencaple pressed forward and came close to adding to their lead from shots from Murray and Godwin.

Ardencaple had defending of their own to do when stand in keeper Ballantyne made his only mistake of the day and picked up a back pass, but Glenvale blazed the resultant free kick over the bar.

Shields had a storming run from inside his own half, playing a one-two with Murray and bursting through the Glenvale defence before attempting to chip the keeper, whose fingertip save knocked the ball round the post.

Not to be denied, moments later Shields' diagonal ball found Godwin at the back post who coolly lofted the ball over the keeper to make it 3-0.

Glenvale were still in the game, and Ardencaple were caught man for man on a break, and had Ballentyne to thank for an outstanding point blank save to preserve their three-goal advantage.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Poirier, whose pace had caused Glenvale problems all day, beat the keeper to the ball before squaring to Godwin who knocked the ball home from six yards out for number four.

Glenvale, to their credit, were still battling away, and pulled a goal back when Ardencaple failed to clear the ball, despite Ballantyne's save falling to an Ardencaple defender.

With eight minutes to go Glenvale thought they'd pulled one back when a deflected shot appeared to end up in the Ardencaple net: the referee initially awarded a goal, but Ballantyne, who had his near post covered, showed the referee the net had come free at the post and that the ball had gone in through the side netting.

Glenvale tried to get the referee to stick to his original decision, to no avail – but it didn't matter as Caple let their concentration slip and the resulting corner was forced home.

However, Caple were able to see out what was left of the match thanks to another good defensive display – though the team needs to be more ruthless with goal-scoring chances.
