FOUR Helensburgh Youth Rugby teams took part in the annual Glasgow Accies youth rugby festival recently – and while all the P4-P7 squads competed well, it was the P7 squad who wore the biggest smiles on the journey home after winning a highly-competitive tournament.

Although delighted to be returning with the silverware, more pleasing to coaches Martin Caldwell and Paul McClearn was the manner in which the team played throughout their four matches.

This P7 team, although smaller and less physical than some of the bigger Glasgow clubs, more than matched them for skill, keeping the ball live away from contact and maintaining the impressive tempo the team enjoy playing at throughout.

Helensburgh were paired with East Kilbride, Strathendrick and Glasgow Accies in the pool stage, with Rory Caldwell scoring both tries as Burgh beat East Kilbride 2-1 in their first game, before Caldwell was joined on the score sheet by Tom McClearn, Jonathan Yarham, Oscar Jamieson, Rhuairidh Hall and Shaun Callan in a 7-0 win over Strathendrick.

Hosts Glasgow Accies presented a much tougher proposition in Helensburgh’s last pool match, but in an entertaining encounter Burgh held their nerve to close out a 5-4 win thanks to tries from Jamieson, Callan and a Caldwell hat-trick.

The final saw Helensburgh up against a physical and well-drilled Glasgow Hutcheson’s Aloysians (GHA) team – and Burgh saved their best for last, leaving GHA struggling against a high-tempo, fast-flowing and relentless offloading game.

With the scores close a GHA player broke free and crossed the try-line, only to be hunted down by Caldwell when the cause seemed lost and dumped over the dead ball line, saving what seemed a certain score.

That moment proved a turning point, and Helensburgh responded with a superb team try started by a reverse pass from Holling and offload from Callan, finished with a superb burst of pace from Cole Hutton.

The final whistle sounded and some very happy but sore bodies celebrated a fantastic 5-3 victory with every member of the squad playing their part in a successful day of rugby. Scorers in the final were Hutton, Jamieson and two for Caldwell.
