HELENSBURGH’S rugby, football and hockey teams are due to return to action this Saturday, March 23, after wintry weather virtually wiped out last weekend’s fixture list for local clubs.

Helensburgh Rugby Club travel to Lanarkshire on Saturday in Tennent’s West Regional Division 2 to face Uddingston, hoping to repeat their 41-5 win when the teams met in the Greens’ previous fixture on March 1.

A victory for Helensburgh in Saturday’s match would be the Greens’ third in a row, and would be the first time in 2018-19 that they’ve managed such a feat.

The game takes place at Uddingston Cricket and Sports Club’s grounds at Bothwell Castle Policies (G71 7HJ), and kick-off is at 3pm.

On the football front, Helensburgh AFC are going for what would be a remarkable ninth victory in a row after their match last Saturday at home to Carradale was called off due to travel difficulties caused by the bad weather in Argyll.

Like their rugby-playing counterparts, HAFC will also head for Lanarkshire this Saturday – in their case for a group tie in section 3 the Greater Glasgow Premier AFL (GGPAFL) President’s Cup tournament.

Their opponents on Saturday are East Kilbride YM’s GGPAFL team, who play in Division 1 of the league set-up – a step above Helensburgh – having won back-to-back promotions in the last two seasons and appeared in two cup finals in the last three years.

Saturday’s match is scheduled to be played at EKYM’s home ground at Kirktonholme Park (G74 1NF), and kick-off is at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Rhu Amateurs are due to play the penultimate match of their league campaign in Division 1B of the Caledonian AFL.

Their opponents at Ardenconnel Park on Saturday are a Rothesay Brandane team who won 3-2 when the sides last met on Bute in October.

The fixture has already been postponed on two occasions this season after bad weather left Rhu’s home ground unplayable; if the elements play ball this weekend, Saturday’s match kicks off at 2pm.

The only local football team not due to be in action this weekend are Ardencaple FC, who have no scheduled league or cup fixture in the Central Scottish AFL.

Also this Saturday, both the men of Helensburgh Hockey Club and the ladies of Loch Lomond HC are due to be in league action.

HHC travel to Milngavie to take on Western Wildcats’ third XI looking to maintain the fine form which has taken them to the top of Division 1B of Scottish Hockey’s West District league set-up.

And closer to home, HHC’s second and third teams are scheduled to play each other in West District Division 3, with a 12.45pm push-back at Hermitage Academy.

The latter match is the first instalment of a double bill of hockey on the Academy’s all-weather surface on Saturday, with Loch Lomond’s first team due to face Garnock in a West District Division 2 fixture at 2.15pm.

Loch Lomond’s second XI – the only local sports team to beat the weather last weekend, when they took on Glasgow University’s fifth team on Sunday – have no scheduled fixture this weekend.
