HELENSBURGH FC have been promoted to the first division of the Greater Glasgow Premier AFL following a ruling by the league's executive committee.

The club's elevation to the first division was confirmed on Thursday night, when the league decided that the result of their match against Baillieston on April 27 – which was abandoned after a Baillieston player pushed the match referee – would be allowed to stand.

Helensburgh were leading 5-3 when the match was called off – the ninth win in an incredible run of 14 successive victories, stretching all the way back to early December that have taken Burgh from the lower reaches of the table to the top of the tree.

And even though one of those wins has been wiped from the records – an 8-3 victory away to Carradale in January, cancelled because the Kintyre club have since withdrawn from the league – the run of wins leaves Helensburgh not only with promotion confirmed, but facing the prospect of playing off for the league championship in their very last match of the season, away to second top South Lochaber Thistle on June 1.

The club said in a statement on Facebook on Thursday: "Tonight at the committee meeting of the GGPAFL the appeal for the amateurs game that was abandoned in April was upheld.

"This decision means the amateur team will be promoted into the first division next season. Although we still have one very important game to play the objective for the season has been achieved.

"A massive congratulations to everyone who played a part in this success."
