HELENSBURGH Golf Club gents’ captain Ian Shields and his clubmate Babs Robertson made it a home triumph in the club’s first open competition of the season this week.

The Burgh pair were among 44 couples, many of them visiting from clubs elsewhere in central Scotland, doing battle in the Rosebowl Senior Mixed Open Championship, sponsored by the Coffee Club in Colquhoun Square.

Shields and Robertson’s fine score of 39 points was enough to win them the trophy, two points ahead of the chasing pack; runners-up Anthony King, from Sherborne Golf Club in Dorset, playing with local member Linda Moffat, secured second place ahead of David and Lynn Them, from Burntisland Golf Club in Fife, after both pairs returned scores of 37 points.

The Senior Midweek Medal was shared by five players – Alan Sloan, Brian Grant, Malcolm Hyatt, Andy Bennett and Alan Rankin – all of whom achieved 39 stableford points.
