SCOTLAND’S FootGolf captain has hailed Helensburgh for hosting The Loch Lomond Open - the latest event in the official Scottish Tour.

Dozens of the country’s top players headed to Helensburgh Golf Club for the 36-hole tournament, on a course Neil Shave had designed specifically for the event.

Neil, who has captained the Scottish team and been tournament director of FootGolf Scotland since 2018, said: “The event went incredibly well despite the weather trying its best to dampen the mood.

“The standard on show was of a top level on what was a very challenging course design for the players.

“It was also great to see a good number of golf club members and locals out to support the event and take in some of the action.

“I’d like to say a huge thanks to Helensburgh Golf Club for hosting the event and being so supportive throughout the entire process.”

Scotland vice-captain Matt Morgan was seen as the favourite to lift the trophy, having won the previous two Scottish Tour events.

And the 26-year-old stayed true to form, posting a score of -13 after two rounds on the par 70 course.

That left Matt, who is captain of Elmwood FootGolf Club, tied with Muckhart FootGolf Club vice-captain Callum Haig.

But it was Fife man Matt who prevailed, winning a play-off on the 18th hole to take the win.

Fellow Muckhart FootGolf Club player Joe McCourt, the reigning Scottish champion, completed the podium, taking home the bronze with a score of 12 under par.

Neil added: “We were extremely excited and proud to be taking a Scottish Tour Event to Helensburgh Golf Club.

“It shows the continued development of our sport as we continue to grow, not only in numbers but also in the standard of what we are offering our participants.

“There was live coverage on the FootGolf Scotland Facebook page and a good few locals headed down to watch and see the players in action.”

And David Quigley, who has played in tournaments in 11 different countries - Scotland, England, Wales, Portugal, France, Turkey, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Holland, Spain and Morocco - said it was one of the best events he’s ever played in.

He said: “Helensburgh is one of the best courses I have played and it was by far the best event this year.

“The locals and members of the golf club also made the event enjoyable by coming out and supporting us.

“It was superb work from Neil to not only bring a venue like this on to the tour but also run it so well.”
