SCOTLAND’S participation in the women’s World Cup for the first time may be fast becoming a distant memory, but with the tournament in France fast approaching an exciting climax in this weekend's final, the appetite for the game among the country’s girls has arguably never been greater.

And Ardencaple FC have been getting in on the act by holding their first girls’ football tournament.

Hosted at Hermitage Academy and sponsored by Helensburgh Toyota, the competition saw Caple’s own girls’ team compete alongside Argyll rivals Lochnell and Lochgilphead.

A keenly-contested day of football was watched by Ernie Cowan from Helensburgh Toyota, who commented afterwards that he had been very impressed with the quality of the play and had thoroughly enjoyed the standard of football on show.

Euan Birss, Ardencaple FC’s club secretary, said afterwards: “Ardencaple would like to thank Helensburgh Toyota for sponsoring the girls’ tournament, and Eden for sponsoring the girls’ waterproof tops for the new season.”

Ardencaple are aiming to make the most of this summer’s World Cup fever by encouraging more girls to come along and play football with the club.
