HELENSBURGH Golf Club’s Jon Simmons and Ian Porter partnered visitors Stuart and Lynne McNeil from the Carrick Golf Club to victory in the club’s gents’ invitational scramble competition.

Their sparkling score of 53.0 saw them finish clear of the Helensburgh pair of Michael White and Ian Leach, with their visitors R. Walsh from Worthing and Mark Gandy from Windyhill, who took the runners-up spot with a score of 54.5.

Meanwhile, Kevin Robb was a convincing winner of the first class section in the July Ormond Medal with a net 66, four ahead of runner-up Craig Bonthrone.

Luke Snetzer won the second class section with a net 68, with Alan Bell one shot behind, while a net 67 won Scott Kennedy the third class honours, one shot ahead of Mike Tait.

Terry Smith produced one of the best rounds of the year at Helensburgh so far, winning the first class of the July Breingan Medal round with a two-under-par gross score of 67 for a winning net 64.

Kevin Robb had to settle for second place with a net 66, a score which on most other days would have been good enough to win.

John Fugler won the second class with a net 70, pipping Calum Kennedy by virtue of the better inward half, while the same rule gave Steven Court the second class honours after both he and Harry Fazal returned net scores of 69.

Finally this week, Helensburgh’s ladies fought out a tough halved match in dreich conditions in their latest Allander League match against Hilton Park.
