Helensburgh Hockey Club's first team ended their winless start to the 2019-20 campaign with a fine 4-1 victory away to Glasgow University's third XI.

Neither side had won a game yet this season so it was set to be an interesting match, and Helensburgh got off to the best possible start with a quick attack; passing the ball through Heywood, Stuart and to Mackenzie, the striker found the sweet spot and scored within the first five minutes.

It was one way traffic for the rest of the half as Helensburgh kept pressing the Uni defence; Keith was quiet in the Burgh goal, and the defence were busy helping supply the attackers with chances for more goals.

Helensburgh had a number of short corners, with Black coming close twice, and third time was a charm, as the ball was pushed out by Black, with Cox setting up Bowyer, who was composed in front of goal, and slipped the ball to Black who slotted the ball into the roof of the net.

Helensburgh continued to press throughout the half but the Uni keeper was playing excellently and kept his side well within reach as the visitors reached half time two goals to the good.

Glasgow came out fighting in the second half and Burgh struggled to keep up, and Keith was certainly busier in the second half, pulling off a number of important saves.

However it was Helensburgh who got the next goal after a breakaway from MacKenzie won the away side a short corner; Black pushed out again, with Hartopp the receiver, and he hit a solid strike and was fortunate after a deflection off a defender’s stick saw it nestle into the roof of the net.

Helensburgh may have relaxed a little after the third goal went in because the Uni side pressed well and earned themselves a goal.

However the visitors did get the last laugh as they played some neat hockey up the pitch, with Caulfield, Stuart and Hartopp involved; Jonathon Cox got the final touch though, as he found himself a little space in the D, before firing home to make it 4-1.

Helensburgh's second XI didn’t fare quite as well, as they struggled to get going against a tough Stepps second team.

An early goal for Stepps set the tone for the game, with Helensburgh left wondering what went wrong after they had such a strong opening ten minutes.

However it improved, in terms of possession, for the home side, as they dominated the game. The Burgh side were left lacking up front however as Stepps held firm. It finished a very close 1-0 at half time.

The second half continued much as the first, however Stepps managed a second goal without reply.

Helensburgh were still fighting but were just lacking that final ball, though they did manage a goal eventually, as a well struck short corner by J. Murphy brought the score to within one.

Chances late on for J. Caulfield, S. Murphy and S. Caulfield all came and went but sadly it wasn’t to be as the game finished 2-1.
