SUBSTITUTE Pete Logan put on a fantastic demonstration of individual play in the eighth and final week of the Tennent’s Winter League at Helensburgh Golf Club on Sunday.

But on a day of brilliant scores, his gross 69, for a net 60, wasn’t even enough to win him and his partner, club captain Ian Shields, first or even second place in the weekly standings.

Playing off the yellow tees to the main greens, Calum Kennedy and substitute Neil Sloan returned an unbelievable stableford score of 48 points to win the competition, one point clear of second placed Andy Donald and substitute Graham Thorley.

As Calum and Neil were previous first placed winners of the hamper, they were rewarded with the second prize whisky, whilst Andy and Graham took home the first prize hampers.

Third place on 46 points was shared between three pairs – Don Griffin and Tin Hughes, Jamie Francis and Ray Ford, and the aforementioned Logan and Shields, with the latter pair receiving prizes of golf balls by recording a better final six holes.

All players enjoyed a reasonably dry day with little wind – some would say ideal golfing conditions – which was reflected in the general high scores returned by the field.

Fifteen twos were recorded, with each scorer receiving four Callaway Super Soft balls.

Fourteen substitutes took part, taking the total number of participants in this year’s competition to 120 players – a fantastic turnout by the gents’ section.

The Winter League prize-giving dinner takes place on Friday, December 6, when Alan Bell’s team will be presented with the team prize after recording a total of 1,292 points, 15 ahead of Don Griffin’s team.

Paul Rattrey and Jonny Boult pick up the eclectic prize on 62 stableford points, one point ahead of Dougie Singleton and John Gallacher.

The participants are looking forward to welcoming guest speaker Bill Copeland to the club for Friday’s event.
