GILLIAN FINCH scored both goals as Loch Lomond’s second XI made it three wins in a row with a 2-0 win over Ayr at Hermitage Academy.

The Loch Lomond side’s recent good form had seen them climb to a season’s best position of fourth in the league table ahead of the game, and on a great day for hockey, the match started off fast and furious with every ball being fought over.

Ayr had a number of very experienced and skilled players in their ranks, and the Loch Lomond team had to play as a unit, using the width of the pitch to try and stretch the opposition.

Loch Lomond’s first goal came from a powerful hit from Jane Neil in defence that, within one more touch of the ball was with their top striker Finch, who finished the move off in style to take the home team into the lead.

The sun was at a difficult angle in the closing minutes of the first half, and it took all of Loch Lomond’s concentration to keep the ball in their half of the pitch.

The away team came out fighting in the second half with goalie Anne McGregor making the season’s best save so far from a one-on-one, with the Ayr striker coming at her full pace.

Loch Lomond quickly made it 2-0 with another goal from Finch to make the points secure.
