CARDROSS Tennis Club’s ladies have been crowned divisional champions of the West of Scotland ‘Plan B’ league after a draw and a convincing victory in their last two fixtures of the abbreviated season.
The penultimate match of their campaign saw Rona Foster, Gwen Irvine, Sara Sullivan and Danielle Gordon travel to Thorn Park Tennis Club in Bearsden on September 14, when a 3-3 draw took the Cardross quartet to the top of the table.
Rona and Gwen found themselves up against a strong pairing from the host club, and despite battling hard and taking a good number of games to deuce, the Cardross duo lost out 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.
Second couple Sara and Danielle took a while to adjust to the slower pace of Thorn Park’s artificial clay courts, but battled hard to stay in the first set before taking it on a tie-break.

Inspired by their win in a closely-contested opening set, Sara and Danielle had too much in the tank for their opponents and took the second set 6-2 and the third 6-3.
That result left the Cardross team knowing that victory in their last match would be enough to secure top place in their division in the final standings – and they rose to the occasion in style with a 6-0 victory at home to Titwood on Monday night.
First couple Caroline McDaid and Janet Hogg won their match 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, and second couple Denise Laverty and Rona Foster were in similarly uncompromising mood as they saw off their opponents 6-0, 6-3, 6-3 to confirm a successful end to a campaign very much shortened as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
