ALAN MacBEATH and Catherine Court emerged triumphant in the over-40s singles championship finals at Helensburgh Tennis Club.

Alan was out to go one better after losing out in the finals of the open singles and doubles the previous weekend, but found himself up against a tough opponent in the gents’ final in the shape of Stephen Lewis.

The opening set saw both players hold serve until the ninth game where Alan broke Stephen’s serve after a long game with eight deuces.

The second set was also close, with almost all the games going to deuce, but it was Alan who was the most consistent, making fewer errors and eventually taking the set, and the title, with a fine overhead smash.

Catherine, meanwhile, beat Sue McKichen in two sets in a repeat of the open ladies’ singles final.

The match featured plenty of long rallies, but Catherine’s consistent groundstrokes proved the deciding factor as she clinched her second championship title of the season.

In the mixed doubles Alan was back on court alongside partner Val Pace and in a very entertaining match Alan and Val came out winners 2-0.

The men’s over-55 doubles saw Keith Love and Bobby Kerr narrowly beat Graham Court and Matt Mackie in a thrilling match; Keith and Bobby took the opening set 6-2, but Matt and Graham came back fighting and took the second by the same 6-2 margin.

The deciding championship tie break saw Keith and Bobby get off to a great start by opening up a 5-2 lead; Graham and Matt kept fighting, and at one point it looked like a comeback was on the cards, but Keith and Bobby kept their nerve and took the tie break 10-6.

In the over-55 section, the ladies’ doubles final saw Mandy Allen and Jackie Hunter battle back from a set down to defeat Jane Carroll and Sue McKichen.

Val Pace and Graham Court beat Nigel Canty and Jane Carroll 2-0 in the mixed doubles final, and there was also a 2-0 win for Keith Love against Graham Court in the men’s singles.

Karrie Walters and Yolandie Trewhella completed the list of this year’s prize winners when they beat Anna Scullion and Catherine Court 2-0 in the open ladies doubles.
