This year's winners of a contest to remember a promising young player have been crowned.

Cardross Tennis Club awarded the Martin Simpson Cup after a day of fun mixed doubles tennis in memory of their former friend.

The competition sees a random draw put players together to enjoy a day of sport and sunshine, and remember the promising young player whose life was cut short by an accident.

Organisers said after two hours of "intense battle" on June 1, including group stages that were settled by match tie-breaks, Danielle Gordon and Gary Glen lifted the trophy.

Club President David Lockhart said: "It’s been a brilliant day. Congratulations to Danielle and Gary on a well-deserved win and a massive thank you to the members who worked hard to make the day so special.

“Of course, today was about more than tennis, it’s a poignant moment for everyone here who knew Martin.

"I never had the pleasure of meeting him personally but I’m sure his loss is still keenly felt by friends and family.

"We all know how lucky we are to be here playing the sport we love and marking his memory."
