A SIXTH year pupil at Lomond School has climbed to the top of the Scottish under-17 javelin rankings.

Ruairidh Scott-Brown's ascent to number one follows a summer of success in which he represented Scotland three times – at the UK School Games, the Celtic Games U18 and the Scottish International Athletics Board (SIAB) U17 meeting.

Coached by Helensburgh’s Robert Wilkie as well as being a member of Victoria Park Glasgow Athletics Club, Ruairidh also participated in Team Glasgow, a British Youth Development League, which reached the national finals.

And Johanna Urquhart, Lomond School’s principal, was delighted with the youngster’s success.

She said: “This is incredibly good news for Ruairidh, whose hard work training throughout the year has been rewarded with these fantastic results.

“Ruairidh is a talented individual who is determined to succeed in all of his many endeavours to the best of his ability.

“One of several elite athletes at Lomond School, Ruairidh is an example to other young people of how both academic and sporting commitments can be balanced with hard work and determination.”
