Helensburgh FC have progressed into the quarter finals of the Greater Glasgow Premier AFL league cup after comfortably seeing off Westcliff 3-0 last week.

Del Park bagged a first-half brace and Johns header sealed the win as Burgh sailed through to the next round undefeated in the group stage.

The visitors started well on a tough park, but Westcliff had the first effort on goal, which was comfortably dealt with by keeper O’Brien.

From then on, however, Helensburgh took control and created a number of chances as Jones and Jefferies failed to find the back of the net.

But they didn’t have to wait long to finally break the deadlock as Park picked up a loose clearance 20 minutes in and beat the keeper at the near post with his shot.

Helensburgh took the short journey over the Blackhill on Wed night to take on Westcliff in this GGPAFL league cup game.

The local lads started well enough on a sticky Park although it was Westcliff that had the first effort on goal which was comfortably dealt with by O’ Brien in goal.

From then on however the burgh team took control and created a number of chances however Jones and Jeffries efforts failed to find the net.

The deadlock was broken 20 minutes in. Del Park picked up a loose clearance and his shot beat the keeper at his near post.

The lads continued to push forward and found another reward as Park netted his second effort of the game with another drive from just inside the box.

But Westcliff to their credit kept at it only for splendid defending by Johns to keep them at bay.

Westcliff then started the second half well as they tried to get a foothold in the game. They came close on a few occasions but rushed shots didn’t help their cause.

From one of these chances, however, they managed to bag a penalty as Johns was adjudged to have brought down the striker as the pair went for the ball.

But O’Brien was the hero in goal as he saved the resultant penalty kick and cleared the ball from danger.

From then on in it was the Helensburgh men who controlled the game with Johns topping off a fine display with a headed goal from a Johannson corner to put the game to bed for the visitors. This was an excellent team showing against a very capable Westcliff team.
