Last weekend, Helensburgh Golf Club held its own Ryder Cup Scramble, kindly sponsored by House of Darrach.

21 teams of 4 took to the course on a very pleasant Sunday. Husband and wife team, Steven and Denise Donald with Sandy and Shona Bulloch brought home a magnificent nett 53.2 to take 1st place.

In close second place were Don Griffin, Calum and Scott Kennedy and Tim Hughes with nett 55.2 and 3rd with nett 55.7 were John and Ray Ford, Jamie Francis and Jim McKenzie.

Gary Orr, world class professional golfer and honorary member of HGC, began his very successful golfing career as a junior member at Helensburgh.

On a recent visit to the Club, Gary presented to HGC, the Gary Orr Trophy and on Saturday, 56 players took part in the Gary Orr 5 Club Challenge.

This is a Stableford competition whereby each player is restricted to using only 5 clubs. Some might say they play better that way.

3 players scored 37 points. After consideration of each better inward half, Jim McKenzie emerged taking 1st place.

David Kennedy and David Kick were 2nd and 3rd.

Closely behind, in joint 4th, were Ed Somerville, Jamie Francis and Ewen Cameron all with 36 points.

On Sunday 11th September HGC Ladies were again in action this time with the Club’s Junior Boys in the Dormay Cup.

The format of this competition was a Greensome Stableford with a lady paired with a junior boy.

The winners were Ben Armstrong and Jean Ramsay.

Again, this competition was kindly sponsored by Riding Sawmills Ltd and the trophy and prizes were presented by Frank Riding, Club Chairman.
