HELENSBURGH Rugby Club got their West District First Division campaign off to a losing start as they fell to a 36-8 defeat at East Kilbride on Saturday.

The Grizzlies had started off well but were punished for a lacklustre second half showing.

EK’s Scott Shankie kicked a penalty before home prop Eddie Beaton scored a try which was converted by Shankie. This sandwiched a good Helensburgh try in the 19th minute.

EK had forward dominance for the bulk of the afternoon and they were out the traps quickly in the second half.

Roddy Beaton scored after 43 minutes and more EK tries followed from Shankie (2) and Chris McLellan as Burgh struggled to make inroads in the second half.

David Calderwood’s side will be hoping for an improvement this Saturday, September 9, when they host their first home league game of the season at Ardencaple.

The visitors to Helensburgh are newly promoted Stewarty RFC, who also got off to a losing start on Saturday with a 45-16 home defeat to Carrick.
