HUNDREDS of brave individuals tackled the annual Glasgow kiltwalk over the weekend.

Members of the public signed up for the event which took place on Sunday, April 24.

There were three separate events which covered different distances so that everyone could get involved.

There was the Wee Wander, a total of just over six miles which involved three laps of Balloch Country Park.

The Big Stroll, which covered a distance of just over 14 miles, it began in Clydebank then continued through Bowling, Dumbarton and Vale of Leven to the finish line within Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park at Moss O Balloch.

And lastly, the 26 mile, Mighty Stride which started at the home of Scottish Football at Hampden Park and finished at Moss O Balloch within the Country Park. This year this event had staggered start times due to the large amount of people participating and to stop congestion, making the event safer and more enjoyable.

Andrea Green, from Helensburgh, tackled the 14 mile kiltwalk to raise money for the Beatson Trust.

Andrea said: “Cancer is in everyone’s lives, including mine, my best friend has this year been given the all clear from breast cancer which is fantastic and we all feel very blessed.

“I am taking on this challenge with my close friend Barrie McQueen, who’s family has also been affected by cancer.”

Andrea found the walk particularly challenging as four years ago she broke her ankle. Four years and operations later, including bone graphs from her knee to her ankle and a metal plate with seven screws that had to be re-broken and fixed, Andrea still has limited movement but felt it was her time to give back and accepted the 14-mile challenge.

She told the Advertiser: “It was a fantastic day and a great atmosphere from start to finish but the last two miles were a killer as blisters had started to form and my legs were feeling it.

“But it’s all worth it, especially when you think of all the lives that are affected by cancer, which made the Beatson charity our number one choice to fundraise for.

“We raised a total of £250 for the charity and I feel very happy that we did it. Well done to everyone who took part.”
