ONE of Scotland’s oldest Highland Games is set to run this weekend and thousands are expected to show up.

The Luss Highland Games, which takes place on Saturday at the Luss Games Field, is in its 141st year and this year is set to provide everything visitors expect - and more.

Sir Malcolm Colquhoun, said: “The first Luss Highland Gathering was held in 1875 and has been held annually since, except for a break during the two World Wars.

“It owns its inception to the enthusiasm of local farmers and sportsmen, and has over the years become a symbol of local sporting endeavour and community spirit. It also brings an influx of visitors from distant lands seeking their heritage.

“It is my hope that people coming along will enjoy visiting our community at Luss.”

The traditional games will feature caber tossing, weightlifting, hill races, highland dancing and piping competitions as well as a variety of food and drink and stalls to entertain all ages.

Dumbarton Amateur Weightlifting Club are holding a competition open to the public.

Scottish gold medal winner in World Powerlifting championships, Tom Moffat will also be in attendance providing the public with a chance to see him in action and see how their skills compare.

THE Loch Lomond Arms Hotel and Luss Seafood Bar will present alongside the Luss General Store and Inverbeg Holiday Park in an extended Luss Estates tent. This will be the first year that the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel will provide a hog roast.

Luss Smokehouse will also attend the event selling their beech smoked salmon and there will be a seating area serving wines and soft drinks as well as delicious food from Luss Seafood Bar.

After the games there is a Games Day Ceilidh, which will be held at the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel and will feature live music from Stuart McKeown Ceilidh Band.

Tickets for this part of the event which will run from 7.30pm until midnight are priced at £10 and can be purchased in advance from the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel by calling 01436 860 420 or emailing Valerie.jones@lochlomondarmshotel.com

Organisers hope that the events and activities on offer will draw a crowd on the day.

A spokeswoman for Luss Estates: “People turn up in their thousands for the event but just how many thousands depend on the weather.

“This year the games field is looking good and we have our fingers crossed for good weather. That said, lots of loyal supporters turn up every year come rain or shine.”

In partnership with Cruise Loch Lomond and Sweeney’s Cruises, the Luss Highland Games are offering half price entry to the games with a valid cruise ticket dated the day of the event, July 2.

The Luss Highland Games costs £6 for adults to attend, £3 for children and OAPs and £14 for a family ticket which consists of two adults and two children. The car park is £2.
