CENTRE 81 in Garelochhead played host to a two-day Argyll Youth Arts workshop on Saturday and Sunday.

The event was organised by Kim Burke and Hannah Scott, who both work for Argyll Youth Arts as Youth Arts Promoters, aiming to promote existing events and opportunities to young people in Helensburgh and Lomond and get young people more active in the community throughout all of the creative arts.

Argyll Youth Arts is a non-profit organisation funded by Creative Scotland, aiming to create more opportunities for young people throughout all of creative arts in Argyll and Bute.

Kim and Hannan enlisted the help of Glasgow artists Lauren Gault and Lauren Currie for the event on August 6 and 7.

The aim of the workshop at the village's community and youth centre was to deliver a creative experience for young people aged 9-14 over a consecutive two-day workshop, allowing them to experience something different and new that limitations within school, such as materials, scale and time, may not allow them to experience when studying art.

The workshop varied on each day, the first day involving exploring the imagination and working creatively with materials they may have never used before such as clay, foam, salt, paint and rice.

The second day of the workshop involved thinking about 2D to 3D forms through creating wire structures. It involved thinking about the human body as sculpture and then demonstrating the form into a sculpture, using recycled and non precious materials, such as cardboard, bottles, willow, straws and string.

Overall the workshop had an amazing turnout with 19 participants on the Saturday and 17 on the Sunday.

The weekend also featured many enquiries from those interested in taking part in similar workshops in the future - and they won't have long to wait for their wish to be realised, because next up for Argyll Youth Arts is a residential 'Creative Weekend' at Benmore Outdoor Centre near Dunoon from August 19-21.

That event is open to young people aged 13-18, costs only £10, and will support a range of creative activities, including music, outdoor art, dance, kite making, sculpture, spoken word, ceilidh, film and performance.
