Helensburgh's Gordon Reid has had a special summer after winning Wimbledon's singles and doubles titles, but he now has far more exclusive honour.

Blair Drummond Safari Park recently celebrated the births of four lion cubs, naming one Murray, as the cubs were born the day after his Wimbledon success.

The Safari Park went to their fans to pick the other three names, and one of the winning names was Reid, named in honour of the tennis star.

Reid said: “It's not every day that happens, it's pretty cool and the other one is named Murray so to have his wee brother named Reid is pretty special.

“I'm going to go up and meet the wee guy next weekend before I go away.

“I'm hoping they're going to let me play with them and cuddle with them, just as long as the mum's not around.”

The wheelchair tennis star, who is heading off to Rio next month, has won three grand slam titles this year, and it has not gone unnoticed.

Blair Drummond staff thought the name was a fitting tribute to the Scottish tennis pair, with Murray recently winning Olympic Gold in the Men's Singles at Rio and Wimbledon this summer.

Dave Warren, Education Office at Blair Drummond Safari Park, said: “We had the four lion cubs born about five weeks ago, and then it was decided we were going to name one Murray and that we needed names for the other three.

“We put it out on Facebook to ask for suggestions. Gordon Reid came up a few times and we decided to name it after him."

Mr Warren said the cubs were in good health, and he was hoping the general public would also be able to visit Murray and Reid soon.

He added: “They’re getting on absolutely fine, you can see them online on the webcam, they’re all doing really well.

“It’s quite rare, but it’s not unheard of for a lioness to have four lion cubs, normally they have twos and threes, it is quite a treat for us.

“They’ve all had their vet checks, and the cubs still need their vaccine jags at 9 weeks of age before they can venture into the reserve, and we hope visitors will be able to see them out and about towards the end of September.”

The four cubs, Murray, Reid and their two sisters Isla and Thistle are being carefully watched by mother Karis and father Zulu.
