PLANS for a major increase in the size of the Argyll and Bute UK parliamentary constituency are to be opposed by Argyll and Bute Council.

Council members say the new constituency boundary should not be as large as the Boundary Commission for Scotland has recommended.

As part of plans to reduce the number of Scottish MPs, the Commission wants to increase the constituency to take in the Lochaber area, including the towns of Fort William and Mallaig and the ‘Small Isles’ of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna, and to rename the seat Argyll, Bute and Lochaber.

But local councillors have agreed to recommend that the new constituency should be enlarged only as far as the boundaries of Kinlochleven and Ardnamurchan High Schools, to more closely reflect the historic limits of the former Argyllshire County Council.

An amendment proposing that the status quo be maintained was defeated 18-13.
