A HERMITAGE Academy pupil baked his way to the top spot at the third annual Helensburgh Rotary Club Young Baker competition.

The competition was held in Colgrain Primary School on Tuesday, February 21 where judge Kenneth Harkin, of Glasgow's Riverhill Courtyard had to make the tough decision.

Stewart McKellar was declared the winner on 44 points and was presented with the gold medal by club president Bill Jones.

For the second year running the silver medal went to Elizabeth Swain with 42 points, just one point ahead of bronze medal winner Catriona Adams.

The contest was devised by principal guidance teacher Isobel Cullen and the rotary club's Linda Harvey, with permission from head teacher Geoff Urie.

Ross Gardner said: “The standard of entries was extremely high, and it was a pleasure - but a hard task — to judge this event again.”

The idea of the competition was to give the younger pupils a stepping stone towards the more advanced Rotary Young Chef of the Year Competition. Eleven pupils took part in the competition for first and second year pupils.

Linda Harvey, of the rotary club, said: “Some really talented bakers produced delicious biscuits and the lightest of sponges. The winner produced ‘Rocky Road bars’ and ‘Nana’s Australian cake’.”
