Helensburgh Rotary Club has donated proceeds from its D-Day Anniversary Concert to a number of military charities.

The concert – held in the Victoria Halls earlier this month – raised £1,850 for local good causes.

The HMS Neptune Volunteer Band from Faslane and the Helensburgh-based West of Scotland Military Wives Choir joined forces to play and sing at the event.

Senior vice-president Gordon Burgess welcomed lunch guest Jacqui King, musical director of the West of Scotland Military Wives Choir, to the weekly event, and AJ Hardy, conductor of the HMS Neptune Volunteer Band, joined the meeting after lunch.

Mr Burgess presented a cheque for £550 to AJ for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines charity and a contribution to band funds.

He also presented Ms King with a cheque for £450 for the Military Wives Choir.

Help for Heroes will receive £1,000 and Helensburgh Sea Cadets, who assisted on the night, will receive £300 from the raffle in due course.

Derek Hall, concert convener, said that it had been a fabulous event attended by 230 people which raised an impressive amount for charity.

He said: “There has been tremendous feedback. Jacqui and AJ were exceptionally helpful to me in organising the programme.

"The 75th anniversary of D-Day is in two years' time — perhaps we can think about repeating it then.”
