Members of the recently-formed Helensburgh detachment of the Royal Marine Cadets headed to Clydebank on Saturday to take part in an abseil down the Titan Crane.

The Helensburgh group was among 20 Royal Marine Cadets from throughout the west of Scotland who took part in the event, organised by the Royal Marines Reserve’s Glasgow detachment to raise money for the Royal Marines Charity.

Among the participants was 15-year-old cadet Paul Losekoot, from Cardross, who said that while he had done abseils before - at Auchengillan Outdoor Centre and Ardlui - he’d never taken part in a descent down a 150-foot crane.

Paul said: “It helps that I’m not afraid of heights!

“I’ve been in the Royal Marine Cadets for nine months now - I was in the Army Cadets before that. I’m working towards qualifications in first aid and I’ve already done my weapons handling test as well as qualifications in sailing, canoeing and kayaking, and eventually I’m hoping to join the Marines.”

Instructor Captain Alex Leckie said: “We are a uniformed youth organisation but not, by any means, a recruitment organisation - we’re really about fun and discipline.”
