A GROUP of energetic pupils at Rhu Primary School are hoping to raise £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.

The “Rhu P7 Shine Walkers” – Evie McGill, Emily Welsh and Rebecca Clowe – have signed up to take part in the Shine Night Walk in Glasgow in August, an organised 10km evening walk around the city centre.

To help their fundraising efforts, the girls have also held a number of different events in advance, including a Bake and Book sale which was held at the school on Friday, June 22.

The idea to walk the walk and raise money for Cancer Research UK came from the girls themselves, and will form part of their work towards earning their Scout Fundraising badge.

The girls said: “We are really happy to be working as a team to raise money for a very important cause.

“Everyone at the school has been very supportive and our book and bake sale was a great success.”

Their teacher, Mrs McGill, said: “Everyone at Rhu Primary is very proud of the girls for taking on this exciting challenge and equally impressed by the determination and organisation they have shown so far.

“The girls will be supported by parents and teachers every step of the way including at the Shine Night walk in August, which is a brilliant and fun way for young people to raise money for the most worthy and important of causes. It’s another great example of the community spirit in Rhu which the primary school is at the very heart of.”

Meanwhile, budding authors from Rhu Primary have created a collection of their best stories to help raise money for the school.

The pupils’ sci-fi, adventure, horror and moral stories were inspired by many topics, including images and objects, and their own imaginations.

The money from the sale of the book, titled ‘Writers @ Rhu’ will go towards school funds and the National Literacy Trust.

It can be bought from Amazon as a paperback or e-book.
